Summary of the Book
Elizabeth Egan lives an uneventful and gloomy life. The young woman has been stuck in Baile na gCroíth, a muggy small town in Ireland. People know her as a stiff person, who hardly ever laugh at jokes or having a good time by enjoying the simplest pleasure of life. However, life can be hard when she has to deal with the issues at her home and in her emotions.
Her family is a mess, or even chaotic. Her mother had an alcoholic problem and diced to left her when she was little. As a result, all Elizabeth has is her father, who is emotionally distant and hard to reach. Her sister lives a “wild” life and has left her little son, Luke, in Elizabeth’s care.
Luke says that he has a special friend whom Elizabeth cannot see. The boy’s mysterious new friend is a grown-up guy called Ivan. Luke’s seemingly imaginary friend turns out to be real and when Elizabeth is finally able to see him, she does not really know what to make of him. With Ivan’s fondness for adventure and bright view on things, the man gives Elizabeth new perspective to a whole new way of living. However, the questions remain for her: Is it for real? Is Ivan for real?
Reviews of If You Could See Me Now
“This book sat on my bookshelf for quite a while…waiting for me to be ready to read it. And when it was time…it was time. I flew through the book unable to sit it aside. The story is so sweetly touching. It’s playful and lighthearted yet full of deep emotion and caring. I couldn’t wait to finish the book to pass it along to a friend. This is a story about coming into your own and letting go of the deep seeded beliefs and fears that get in your way. You finish it and it’s like you’re sitting inside a cloud of fairy dust…soft and sparkling and full of awe. And you realize so much the little ways you have or haven’t been truly living, or the ways your fears have held you back and suddenly you can see no other way to live other than laughing in a field making wishes. Ahern has done well.” (Gatlianne Gatlianne – goodreads.com)
