Summary of the Book
Through a life of passion and struggle, Malcolm X became one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century. In this riveting account, he tells of his journey from a prison cell to Mecca, describing his transition from hoodlum to Muslim minister. Here, the man who called himself “the angriest Black man in America” relates how his conversion to true Islam helped him confront his rage and recognize the brotherhood of all mankind.
Reviews of The Autobiography of Malcolm X as Told to Alex Haley
The book is an “as told to” text rather than one Malcolm X himself wrote, but we have the good fortune that Alex Haley, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Roots, was the one who worked with Malcolm X to produce the book. The result is an outstanding book, and a penetrating window into one on the most important figures of the twentieth century. The writing is exceptionally strong and clear. The story is a compelling one, almost novelistic, and it was a fast read.
I highly recommend this book for *all* readers, especially whites. During a radio interview the interviewer asked Malcolm X if it was true that he had said all Negroes in America should be angry and that he was the angriest of them all. Malcolm X admitted that he had. This book will be helpful in contributing to an understanding of that anger. (by Nick Nicholas, MSW, amazon.com)
