A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin is a marvelous fantasy novel first published in 1998. It is the 2nd book in the ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series (now widely known as the Game of Thrones series). Like its prequel, it has gained worldwide critical and commercial success. It has also won several awards since its publication.
Picking the story left by the 1st book, it delivers three big subplots. In Westeros, there is a raging civil war among the Seven Kingdoms. Far at the north at the wall, the Night’s Watch embarks in a daring exploration to find out the truth about the wildlings. Meanwhile, apart from the turmoil underwhelming Westeros, Daenerys Targaryen starts carrying out her plan to reclaim the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

Summary of the Book
A Clash of Kings transports us into a magnificent, forgotten land of revelry and revenge, wizardry and wartime. It is a tale in which maidens cavort with madmen, brother plots against brother, and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside.
Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory may be measured in blood. And the spoils of victory may just go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel…and the coldest hearts. For when rulers clash, all of the land feels the tremors.
Reviews of A Clash of Kings
“Clash of Kings” is a solid follow up to “Game of Thrones.” It manages to be darker and grittier than its predecessor without coming off as gratuitous and continues the story without seeming like it’s being unnecessarily dragged out. Martin’s writing and characters are just as satisfying as they were in the first book, and I finished the novel feeling like I needed to start the next one immediately (and I did – thank goodness I didn’t have to wait!). “A Song of Ice and Fire” is a truly unique and refreshing entry in the fantasy genre…and it’s impossible to stop reading after one (or even two) books.
